HAWKS' WHITNEY JOHNSON TAKES 5TH MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR

Whitney Johnson, five-time MEAC Player of the Week.

Nov. 5, 2007

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) had a standout week, leading her Hawks to a 2-0 mark and with it ran the win streak to 20. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) holds the longest streak in the country thanks to Johnson's help and five times this year she has earned the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week award. Johnson got the fifth nod today as the Hawks closed out the regular season this past Friday with a 3-1 win over North Carolina Central University (NCCU).

Johnson averaged 18.5 kills and four digs in her two matches this week as UMES topped Hampton University 3-0 earlier in the week. She was 12-of-21 and hit .476 from the floor against the Pirates. Against NCCU Johnson had 25 kills and three solo blocks while hitting .333 from the floor.

UMES finished the regular season 22-3 with a 10-0 mark in the MEAC. They also went undefeated home and away, with all three of their defeats coming on neutral courts.

Shaylin Sommer (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero H.S.) also received a nod from the MEAC as an other top performer. Sommer, a freshmen, stepped in for an injury and hustled her way to a solid outing, posting three kills, two digs and a pair of aces in the win against NCCU.

The Hawks are done until the MEAC Tournament, November 16 and 17 in Hampton, Va. They will play the MEAC Southern Division's fourth place team.
