PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Seniors Kimani Kirton (St.Thomas, Jamaica/Kingston) and Ronnie Beard (Frederick, Md./Frederick H.S.) each earned a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on June 6-9.

Kirton received an automatic bid to the Championships after placing fourth in the men's shot put (18.58m or 60'11") at NCAA Regionals, a throw that ranks him 17th in the 26-man field.

Beard missed out on an automatic berth that went to the top five finishers in the East Regional this past weekend, but earned one of the eight at-large spots in the field by virtue of having the fastest time among the remaining regional finalists. He placed eighth in the NCAA East Regional final and posted a top time of 51.20 during the preliminary heat, a finish that ranks him 23rd in the 28-man field.

Ronnie Beard earned an at-large bid in the 400m hurdles

Six others also had hopes of advancing to Nationals. Senior Dionne Wright set a new school mark in the women's shot put (14.87m or 48'9") en route to a 12th place finish while freshman Merrecia James broke a UMES mark in the women's 800m run when she crossed the line in 2:08.67, good for an 11th place finish in the preliminary round.

Senior Danieth Pryce took ninth in preliminaries of the 100m dash in 11.66 and 12th in the 200m dash in 24.01. Junior Tanisha Wisdom had a 10th place preliminary finish of 53.90 in the 400m dash.

Senior Sherita Harriott finished 19th in the women's javelin competition with a throw of 43.90m (159'1") and freshman Peter Sang took 37th in the men's 3000m steeplechase (9:38.85).

All finished the day with personal bests.

The NCAA Championship will be held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Sacramento State University.
