PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania hosted one of the most popular track events this side of the United States, the Penn Relays. For the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), this was the big stage they were looking for. The freshmen were ready to make their marks and the returnees looked to build what is already becoming a tradition of winning at UMES. The Fighting Hawks were ready to make an impact as they stepped onto Franklin Field. The 4x400-meter relay set a nice tone in the prelims as the team ran 3:11.82. Allodin Fothergill, Paul Jones-Burden (47.5), Thomas Keane-Dawes (47.1) and Corey Alexander (48.0)were solid and earned a place in the finals. Dexter Miller was placed on the 4x400 relay after the team qualified for the finals to compromise the all freshman relay team that dominated at Raleigh just weeks ago. They ended up placing 7th overall with a time of 3:17.59. Miller, Fothergill, Jones-Burden, and Keane-Dawes ran well in the prelims of the 4x200 meter relay placing 6th with time of 1:27.29. The Lady Hawks also took care of business in the 4x400-meter relay as the line up of Celia Whyte, Merrecia James, Danai Lendor, and Tanisha Wisdom placed 4th in the finals with a time of 3:43.26. Sherie Brown, Wisdom, Whyte, and James ran 3:55.58 in the sprint-medley relay taking 7th. The Hawks used these team events to prepare for their next meet, the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, beginning Thursday, May 1. They will be held on the campus of Morgan State University. |
