PHOENIX, Ariz./CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Sun Angle Classic held at Arizona State this past weekend was the big stage that the Hawks were looking for. Arizona State, who harbors the defending men's and women's indoor track and field NCAA champions, hosted the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track team along with other notable schools. With a large field of athletes at the meet, the men's team wanted to make an impact. In the 400-meter dash Paul Jones-Burden had the best showing, cracking the top ten for 9th overall, running 48.35. Thomas Keane-Dawes came in at 48.92, which was his personal record and landed him 19th overall. Corey Alexander finished 23rd with a time of 49.36. Clayton James ran 1:55.58 in the 800-meter run. Those four combined their talents in the 4x400-meter run to blaze to a 3rd place finish with a time of 3:14.70. The ladies also faired well. Tanisha Wisdom looked in mid-season form as she qualified for NCAA regional competition in the 400-meter dash, placing 4th with a time of 53.50. She ran the 200-meter dash later in the day, running 24.19, placing 14th. In the 800-meter run the Lady Hawks showed depth by having both Merrecia James and Celia Whyte place in the top ten. James qualified for the NCAA regional meet with a time of 2:07.87 giving her 2nd and Whyte ran 2:10.20 giving her 9th. Much of the same dominance occurred 2,200 miles away at the University of Virginia's Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational. In the 5,000-meter run the distance tandem of Peter Sang and Amon Kiprotich impressed. Crossing the line in 2nd and 4th respectively, they recorded times of 15:08.36 and 15:34.12. Solomon Kirongo placed 9th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:18.21 James Moore also had a productive day picking up two 3rd place finishes in the triple jump and high jump. He recorded a mark of 14.35 meters in the triple jump, and 2.00 meters in the high jump. Jamahl Strachan placed 4th in the high jump with a leap of 1.95. The Lady Hawks were best represented in the field events in Virginia. Saisha Woodward led the way placing 4th in both the javelin and shot put with throws of 40.32 meters and 13.60 meters. Tiona Long placed 8th in the discus with a throw of 39.41 meters. UMES continues their season next weekend by traveling to Morgan State for the Morgan Legacy meet on April 19. |
