PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men and Women's Track & Field teams took eight first place and five second place finishes on route to a very impressive showing at the Coach O Collegiate Invitational held this past weekend on the UMES campus in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. In the field events the Hawks placed five throwers in the top ten of the women's shot put with Tiona Long taking first place with a throw of 12.87 meters and Joycelyn Wheeler (12.06 m) and Soledad Maurice (11.71m) taking fourth and fifth place respectively. In the women's high jump Rashida Beckford tied for second with a jump of 1.57 meters while her counterparts James Moore and Jamahl Strachan tied for first in the men's high jump with jumps of 2.03 meters. Strachan also took second in the men's pole vault a leap of 3.96 meters. On the track the teams were dominating. The men won the distance Medley with a team of Corey Alexander, Amon Kiprotich, Solomon Kirongo and William McCullough who finished with a time 10:48.09. In the 4 x 400 the women's team of Sherie Brown, Danai Lendor, Danielle Spencer and Tanisha Wisdom won with a time of 4:00.5 while the men's team of Dexter Miller, Paul Jones-Burden, Alexander and Clayton James took second in the 4 x 400 with a time of 3:19.64. Individually many of those same athletes were dominant. Wisdom won the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.91 seconds and went on to win the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.66 seconds. Jones-Burden won the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 50.35 while James was second with a time of 50.84 and Alexander was third with a 51.05. In the women's version of the 400 meter dash Lendor took fourth with a time of 59.23 while Brown was fifth with a 59.48. Kiprotich took fifth in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 2:05.16 while Miller was fourth in the 200 meter days with a time of 23.02. Jerome Pyuzza also took a fourth place finish in the one mile run with a time of 4:52.14. Also dominated by the Hawks was the men's 5000 meter run. Peter Sang won the race with a 15:05.64 while Kirongo and Kiprotich were second and third with times of 15:46.46 and 15:51.83. UMES is next in action on January 11 when they travel to New York for the Fordham Invitational. |
